Even now, I am still suferring through the pain...I don't really wanna talk about the ordeal - I just hope that I can put up a good show on Sat!

It's been a long while since anyone of us has blogged. Guess for the older people like me, I'm still not used to blogging...never had this before...plus, there's been so much going on that I guess most of us are also tired out at the end of the day. No energy to blog...

Did I mention that we had a great time during our retreat? KE went on a retreat from 7-9 October and we stayed at the YWCA. That was when we polished up our script and worked on choreography with practically every song. A big "thank you" to Marianne, who came down specially just to work with us on Do-Re-Mi. She's great! Enjoyed working with her. Even though we got stressed out and there were the occassional temper flare-ups (which is inevitable), I think at the end of it, we all benefitted from the retreat. Hmm...didn't someone take some pics of us?!

The "new look" of our website is scheduled to be launched during our concert. Hope it can be ready by then! Thanks Shurn for putting in O.T. to get it done!

Oh yeah, did I say anything about the recording? After rushing into the studio and recording 10 songs, we now find that we can't release the album due to copyright issues. Can't believe that none of the big publishers own a famous song like "Unforgettable"!! Anyway, mixing was a bitch and Desmond (our sound engineer) and I spent quite a few hours in the studio trying to get the sounds right. Sigh....all those late nights...can die!

So now, we have decided to release a single consisting 4 tracks to be released on Sat in conjunction with our concert! Hope our fans will buy them! It will contain 2 english and 2 chinese songs. The chinese songs will NOT be available in the album, so this makes the single a good buy!

For those people who occassionally pop in here, I hope this blog-ful of information is worth your while! Thanks for visiting us! Come back often!

Now I really have to go and rest...

Jason

Key Elements proudly presents JAZZ @ the MOVIES

KEY ELEMENTS
proudly presents
JAZZ AT THE MOVIES

Saturday
5 November 2005
Victoria Concert Hall
7:30 P.M.
Tickets $35, $25 and $15(students)
Available through YMCA (Orchard)

Featuring
original arrangements by
Jason Ong & Benedict Goh

Highlights
Do Re Mi (The Sound of Music)
Spiderman Theme (Spiderman)
Beyond The Sea (Finding Nemo)
Fly Me To The Moon (Down With Love)
Route 66 (Earth Girls Are Easy)
Fallen (Pretty Woman)

Make a date with Key Elements and come share in an evening filled with smooth grooves and electrifying entertainment for young and old. Update!

Harllow, this blog is so dead. Let's recollect what has happened in these past months. KE has been performing a lot and working very hard for our concert which will be coming in a month's time. Meanwhile, we're also busy with recording our very first jazz a cappella album - "Jazz For The Record" (pun intended :P ) For those non-linguistically inclined readers who might go 'HUH?' it reads like " 'juz' for the record".

Anyway, we have done a lot of shows in just these couple of months. Just for the record (haha), we performed for we Flipside @ the Esplanade (13-14 Jun), sang at the Christening Dinner of 'Luweck Swan' @ Equinox (15 Jul), did an Esplanade Lunchbox Concert (26 Jul), sang at a National Day Observance Dinner at Bishan (6 Aug) and A Cappella Attack @ West Coast part (20 Aug), ExonnMobil Campus Concert Series @ University Cultural Centre, NUS (7 Sep) and also appeared in A Cappella Fest 2005 (8 Sep). And most recently, we also did a workshop with The Magnets at The Arts House (25 Sep).

And now having done all that, it's time to slow things down a little and just focus on our concert preparation. We really need to tie loose ends and set things right, be it musically or administratively. It's really a lot of work. This coming concert (on 5 Nov) will be the very first full-length concert that KE has ever performed for. It is part of our efforts in developing ourselves professionally. We have done gigs from weddings to D&Ds and even had a mini-concert at UCC, it's time for us to do a REAL concert on our own. And it will be the cornerstone in marketing our group to our neighbouring countries and perhaps to europe and U.S., which hopefully can set us up for tours and overseas performances in Jazz Festivals and A Cappella summits.

So we hope to have your support to help realise our dream. Please make a date with us on 5 November at Victoria Concert Hall, 7:30pm, 'coz we promise you an experience you will never forget. "Jazz @ the Movies" is our theme and you will get to hear blockbuster themes & familiar favourites given a refreshing twist. Some of the songs are premiering for the 1st time. Also, keep a look-out for our jazz-album as it will be on sale during our concert.

So much for updating. Hope you will continue to support KE! Once again details of our concert below:

KEY ELEMENTS presents
Jazz @ the Movies
5 November, Saturday
Victoria Concert Hall
7:30 P.M.
Tickets @ $35, $25 and $15 (Students)
through YMCA

For details on ticketing, drop us a note at

keyelements06@yahoo.com

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Ben

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://keyelements.blogspot.com/2005/09/update-update.html' title='Update! Was quite surprised that it was so well attended as it was raining the entire morning. And it was lunchtime, so knowing the average Singaporean's love for food, I didn't think many people would spare the time to watch us sing during their all-important lunch hour.

We've sung at the Esplanade before, but that was their Flipside programme, which took place in the concourse, not in the main halls. This afternoon, though, we had the privilege of singing in the concert hall.

We (the first of us who arrived, anyway - the rest were late, as usual) were ushered by staff member Faith to the green room. We were quite impressed as the rooms were kitted out by the Oriental Hotel next door. Very luxurious wallpapers and curtains. There was a plush arm chair and a chaise lounger. The sink was the posh bowl type (the type that splashes all over, unfortunately). Could stay in the room the whole day!

The hall was huge, but thankfully we weren't overwhelmed by the occasion. I thought we did pretty well. The only moment of panic came when Ben had the urge to go just before we went on. But Ben was a trooper and tahan all the way through.

To those who attended, hope you had a an enjoyable time - thanks for your support. Hope the Esplanade invites us back for more shows - I want to experience that green room again!

Kim Beng

Back To Normal...Almost!

Whew! Thank God Music In Motion and the NKF show are finally over!

Being producer of a large-scale concert involving 200+ teenagers with raging hormones and adrenaline is NOOOO fun....can die... I'm so glad I survived it! It was really tough going at times, having to look after a hundred and one things (ranging from visiting Victoria Theatre to measure stage dimensions, buying cloth for O Fortuna, overseeing the booklet design, collating all info the the booklet from all 4 schools, to helping out with band and stage equipment, and playing impromptu for several songs...) but it was also incredibly rewarding. I'm so glad the students who took part got their chance to perform in such a venue. Not everyone will have that chance.

For those who watched the 2nd NKF Cancer Charity show on 9 July (Sunday), and caught the five pretty artistes (Lee Lian, Nh Hui, Jamie Teo, Jesseca Liu and Ai Leng) doing a Shanghai Medley a cappella - yup! I was roped in to coach them for a month+ before this event. It was hard work as there wasn't much time plus I had to shuffle between Music In Motion and this thing. At one stage I was at Media Corp 3-4 times a week. Super siong! But at least it came out quite decently. Coming from 5 ladies who have never sung a cappella before, this is quite an acheivement for them! And thanks to Ben who arranged the song!

So now everything's pretty much back to normal...except we've got our next show to put up, which is next Tuesday...arrrggghhh! Thank goodness I'm pretty much done with the repertoire...memorised almost all of it. Just have to sort out the choreo with the guys tonight...

Soooooooo looking forward to my Bangkok trip with Kim next week. We sang two sets of 30mins each night (at 6.30pm and again at 8.30pm), so we had to warm up at 4.30pm for soundcheck at 5.30pm. So they were pretty long days!

Anyway, I think it was worth the effort from the comments - and applause! - we received. Thanks to friends and family who came down to catch the shows - your support is greatly appreciated. To Geoff: Thanks for rushing back from Jakarta to catch the show. To Tien Seng: Thanks for your support, old friend. To the ladies from Discovery Networks, as well as Samuel Lee and his lovely wife, Audrey: Wow, the whole lot of you came down - thanks! And to those who didn't turn up - you'd better have a good excuse or I shall expect you to buy me a good meal.

I thought we were a little tense during the first session, not knowing what to expect. But we pretty much warmed up after that. I also thought that people might just stay for one song and move on (we weren't in a theatre, after all), but most of the crowd actually stayed for the whole session. Are we good or what?! :-P

Thanks to Desmond for making us sound good, as usual. And to Shaun for snapping pix and putting them up on our website (uhh, when's that gonna happen, ha?)

KimBeng

Thanks Everyone!

Wow! I made an appointment to see the gastro specialist to inform him of what happened with the clarithomycin. He was quite apologetic and says my reaction was rare. Anyway, he wanted to prescribe a new set of drugs for the triple therapy (the bug in my gut cannot be eliminated using just a single type of drug... the doctor says three kinds of drugs need to work in tandem to kill the damned bacteria!), but he decided to be cautious and made an appointment for me to see a skin specialist so that they can test if I am allergic to the new drugs. That's happening tomorrow. Hope all goes well...

On a brighter note, my little nephew turns 1 month today. My brother will be holding an open house for friends and relatives to drop by his place. Will be going in the afternoon for a swim and a bite. Confirms the belief that the human race is doomed with stupidity.

'Kingdom of Heaven' on the other hand was a treat visually - great picturesque landscapes, beautiful castles, nice wardrobe, elaborte sets, epic battle scenes, and acting wasn't bad at all. And although the story is a little weak, but I guess that wasn't the whole point about this movie. The theme of chivalry and courage is perhaps what the director wants to draw our attention to. I give it a 3 and a half stars.

Looking forward to episode III of Star Wars... hehe

Ben

Stealing Kim's Hospital Food

Yay ! Spent all of last night downloading 40 pics for Shurn...then another hour re-editing our mp3s...splicing them and reconverting them into smaller files...was learning how to use the new Nero software while I'm at it! Can die! But I'm glad it's all done...over to you, Shurn! :-)

Ok, Ok, sorry Ben, I shall burn the R&B cd for you pronto!

Hope you're feeling better, Hui Lian!

Feeling a bit moody; this evening went to Queensway to collect my books which I sent for zapping yesterday, then at 8.20pm when I went to the shop, the stupid girl told me they hadn't started on it!! Pissed me off. I didn't want to go back again - another day plus extra parking etc...total waste of time...so I decided to wait for them...took them till 9.40pm to get them done. Sigh....call themselves expert then so unpro. Can die. So I spent one hour playing with my handphone game - backgammon. I need a new game! Does anyone have a game can download into my hp for me? About 15-20mins after we (I was having lunch with a friend from England, Geoff) drove off, I started coughing badly. Then my eyes started itching and watering. Next, rashes started popping up from my neck up. By this time, my eyes had swelled up a little. All this while, I was hacking badly. Worse, my windpipe was slowly closing up. Somehow, I was still able to continue driving.

Well, I knew by now I was having an allergic reaction to something, so I tried to rush home. Somehow, I got the car parked. Geoff rushed up to my apartment to get my medication (so we could show the doctors what I had been on), then we took a cab to a 24-hr clinic at Holland Village (Silver Cross). On hindsight, I should have gone straight to the nearest hospital, but I was afraid the the admission policy was going to be too long and that I would probably collapse before they even took my IC number! Anyway, in the cab, my eyes became so bengkak that I resembled an alien from The X-Files. For those who with a morbid curioisity, my younger brother has a picture of me from the Emergency Ward when he came to see me!! I was dying to scratch the rashes, and became irascible, as Geoff can testify. "Do something! Call someone"I kept telling Geoff, who, I say again, is NOT a Singapore native, so who was he going to call, right?

At the clinic, the counter staff was pretty good, and made the registration process as smooth as possible. That's what Geoff says, anyway, but I was really, really out of it - my breathing had become so laboured and my head was pretty swollen. They put me in Room 2 and almost immediately the doctor on duty came in. Dr Amal Dass took one look at me and said, "No time to explain. I'm just going to jab you first." (Wait, I think he listened to by breathing with his stethoscope first). He pumped me with antihistamine and steroid to reduce the swelling and help relieve the congested symptoms. Although the shots helped, Dr Dass said that I must go to the hospital because I had a very serious reaction, and that he was one step from jabbing me with adrenaline. So I presumed that meant I was one step away from going into anaphylactic shock, which means my system would have collapsed. So from the clininc, I was transferred by ambulance to Alexandra Hospital (which was the hospital I would have checked myself into if I had had the foresight!).

The next few moments were like a scene from an episode of ER. It was quite cool, with everyone stopping to stare (that's from Geoff's account, since I was lying down with my eyes practically swollen shut!). Entering the ambulance on my back, I could see the inner roof rush by - so ER! What annoyed me was the ambulance nurses discussing about me as if I wasn't there!

At the Emergency Ward of Alexandra Hospital, they hooked me up to blood pressure and ECG machines. One young doctor came by and I had to repeat my story. Then another older one came by and said, "Can I take a picture of you? For teaching purposes." WHATEVER!! BTW, one of the attendants was Fazuly, who was on course at the hospital. I met him while covering a story about the X-Games in KL about a year or two ago. He was representing Singapore in in-line skating. Nothing much else happened in the Emergency ward because I was already stabilized. Just waiting for a bed to be assigned to me. That's when Geoff and my younger brother KC arrived (they had gone to return the car I drove earlier, which was rented).

Finally, I was admitted to Ward 4, Bed 16. It was a six-bedder, the rest of which were occupied by quite old men with serious conditions. It was a non-aircon ward (B2) so it was pretty warm. What made it worse was that the mattress and pillows had platic linings, which retained heat and prevented moisture absorption. HATED IT!

Anyway, what I really wanted to say (FINALLY!) is a big "THANK YOU"to the lovely people who came to visit and offered all their love, help and support. Jason, Kevin, Audrey, Greg, Steven and Hui Lian - you guys are fab. And to Geoff, a big hug for staying steady throughout the entire ordeal without freaking out and trusting in my driving abilities to take us BOTH safely home.

The moral of the story is: if you are on new medication, better to have antihistamine at hand!

Kim Beng
PS:Another bummer - I have been diagnosed with diabetes!! SHIT - no more desserts!!!
And coffee without sugar is VILE!
Think I will kill myself now - I live to eat, so what's the point?

YPROMS

The YPROMS went pretty well at Chinatown. Wasn't sure whether we'd reach the Chinese-speaking crowd, but I guess our repertoire was quite fail-safe. With 'The Moon Represents My Heart' by Teresa Teng, the old fogeys were catered for. Then, for the young punks, there was Jay Chou's 'Jian Dan Ai'. The third song was a very alternative version of 'Hua Xin'.

Anyway, the organizing committee's chairman (Kreta Ayer), who happens to be a gym buddy (to my shock and surprise) thought we were really good. Hope that translates to more gigs in the future!

Thanks to the people who came to support: Suzanne Loh and friend, Kenneth Chee and partner. Oh, and Ben's mother's friend, who took photos of us. Thanks for the photos and the book - if only my Chinese were half-decent.

Next gig will be at the Esplanade in June, so those who are reading this (all 2 of you!) have to come support.
